At the end of the school year we tell the kids that the dragons and their friends are going on vacation. This helps to explain why we don't run the Reading Dragons during the summer, and also builds in a fun activity when we bring them back after the summer. When summer ends we have a letter written by the Reading Dragons about their summer vacation and a "photo" showing something they did. We also have a word search and a blank page for kids to draw a picture about what they did during summer vacation.
This activity helps to bring the Reading Dragons to life for the children and makes them relatable. The word searches are a fun activity for older kids and support learning skills like spelling and word recognition as well as strengthen focus and visual scanning. Kids can also draw a picture and write to the dragons about their summer vacation which helps children recall memories, and build a narrative with words or images, and practice fine motor skills.
